What Is A Turret Lathe?

Turret lathe is a form of metal processing lathe, which is used to repeatedly produce repeated parts. According to the nature of its cutting process, these parts are usually interchangeable. It evolved from the early lathe and added the turret, which is an indexable tool holder, which allows multiple cutting operations to be performed. Each cutting operation uses different cutting tools, which can be carried out continuously and easily and quickly without the need for the operator to carry out tasks between settings (such as installing or unloading tools) or control the tool path. The latter is because the tool path is controlled by the machine, whether in a similar fashion in the fixture, through the mechanical restrictions set on it by the sliding block and stop device of the turret, or through the digital guiding servo mechanism of the CNC lathe.

Type Of Turret Lathe

1.Semi automatic turret lathe

Sometimes similar to the above machines, but with power feed and automatic turret indexing at the end of the return stroke, it is called "semi-automatic turret lathe". This naming distinction is vague and not consistently observed. The term "turret lathe" covers all of these. In the 1860s, when semi-automatic turret lathes were developed, they were sometimes called "automatic". What we call "Automata" today, that is, fully automatic machines, have not been developed. At that time, manual and semi-automatic turret lathes were sometimes called "screw machines", although today we retain the term as fully automatic machines.

2.Automatic turret lathe

During the 1870s and 1890s, "automatic" turret lathes with mechanical automation were developed and spread. These machines can perform many part cutting cycles without human intervention. Therefore, the manual turret lathe has greatly reduced the workload of the operator, thus further reducing the workload and improving the productivity. These machines use cams to automate the sliding and indexing of the turret and the opening and closing of the chuck. Therefore, the way they perform the partial cutting cycle is somewhat similar to the way the elaborate cuckoo clock performs the automatic theater performance. Small and medium-sized automatic turret lathes are usually called "screw machine" or "automatic screw machine", while larger ones are usually called "automatic chuck lathe", "automatic chuck machine" or "chuck machine". 3.CNC turret lathe

At the end of World War II, digital computers were ready to develop from a huge laboratory curiosity into a practical technology that could begin to spread to business and industry. The realization of computer-based automation in machine tools through numerical control (NC) and subsequent computer numerical control (CNC) has largely replaced the previous manual and mechanical automation machines, but not completely.

CNC turret turning center allows automatic selection of tools on the turret. CNC lathes can be horizontal or vertical, and six separate tools are installed on one or more turrets. This machine tool can work on two axes of each turret. For complex work, up to six axes are feasible.

4.Vertical turret lathe

The vertical turret lathe fixes the workpiece vertically, makes the headstock sit on the floor, and the panel becomes a horizontal rotating workbench, which is similar to a huge ceramic wheel. This is useful for handling very large, heavy, and short workpieces. Vertical lathe is also called "vertical boring machine" or "boring machine" for short; Therefore, the vertical turret lathe is a vertical boring machine equipped with turret.
